Description

Come and spend a fun day with Shelly Hawley-Yan, learning how to use scratchboard to create your own unique work of art. Shelly will demonstrate, teach and provide individual coaching.

Scratchboard is a beautiful fine art medium, as well as an illustrative technique using sharp knives or tools to cut or engrave into a thin layer of white clay, that is coated with black India ink. It is particularly excellent for rendering the natural textures of feathers, fur, bark and stone. Part of the challenge (and fun!) of Scratchboard, is that you are working “in reverse” – meaning that we are creating white marks on black instead of our usual way of drawing in black on white. This means we will be preserving the shadows instead of the highlights, and working from dark to light instead of light to dark. See Shelly’s website at https://www.ondragonwingsstudio.com and the OAG website for examples.
We will begin with a brief look at some scratchboard history, then get going! We will practice scratching & cutting our marks with various styles of tools, and then start working on our masterpieces! Shelly will bring examples with added colour, and you can bring watercolour paints if you wish.

You will be provided with:

-6×9” Essdee Scraperboard to practice making your marks
-5×7” Ampersand (professional quality) Scratchboard
-A variety of tools will be available for use during the workshop
*a selection of variously sized Ampersand boards and some tools will also be available for purchase

Materials to bring:

A 5” x 7” sketch, or photocopy of an image you wish to create.
A “favorite” craft/ xacto knife, if you have one.
Linocut cutters/tools if you have them
Extra scratchboards if you have them
Watercolour paints, brushes, and water container (optional).
A plastic sheet to cover the table.
